I Need a Favor!!

If you’re friends with me on Facebook then you should be well aware that Flags of the Forgotten went live just days ago. This is my first attempt into a totally different genre and to say that it’s intimidating as hell would be an understatement. I’ve always felt that it took a special breed to create a thriller. A true thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the book. Artists like Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn and Brad Thor know how to do this…and because of this, it took me two very long years to complete this project.

I knew I was jumping into very deep (and often dark) waters when I started this project, but it was one that I felt I had to complete, even if doing so meant falling on my face.
Hard.
With an anvil on the back of my neck.

But there it is, for anybody and everybody to read.

Am I proud of it? Actually, yes. I had a lot of friends step up and allow me to use them as characters. I hope I did them justice. I put a lot of effort into this story and according to the betas that read it, I pulled it off. I hope they weren’t blowing smoke to make me feel better.

Flags of the Forgotten

So, what’s the favor?

You know how writers feel about reviews. We live and die by them. I try not to beg y’all for reviews because…well, I just don’t like to ask. If you’re the type to leave a review, God bless you! Some people feel like it’s way out of their wheelhouse to ‘judge’ something that they don’t feel capable of doing themselves. I understand that completely. Putting a story out there kind of sets you up for the abuse anyway, but then to come to your readers with hat in hand and ask for that extra effort? It’s tough on both parties, I promise.

But that’s exactly what I’m doing.

Please, if you read Flags, please, please, please, leave a review. Good, bad, indifferent, it doesn’t matter. Not your cup of tea? That’s okay. I get it. Thank you for reading it anyway. Loved it and thought it was PERFECT? Great! Glad to hear it…and others would like to know too.

Why is this so important? Like I said, this is a totally new genre for me. I’m known for horror/urban fantasy. Thrillers? Not so much. In order to get Flags to pop up on Amazon’s radar, it has to have the reviews. And that’s where you guys come in. You’re the ONLY ones that make that happen. And that’s why I’m asking.

I’ve had people ask if I plan to make Bobby Bridger and his pals a series? That will depend a LOT on how well it’s received. If it’s a turd dipped in chocolate, then it’s still a turd at heart and nobody wants that. Especially me. But if it’s well received and folks dig it? Then yeah…I could see reviving this group for more action and adventure. But the only way that can happen is if word gets out and it takes reviews for that to happen.

So there it is. I’m asking you, my readers, to step up (and out of your comfort zones) and let others know what you thought of the story. For those of you willing to do it, let me take the time to thank you in advance. For those that just can’t being themselves to do it, I do understand and I still love you.

Caldera 5 is LIVE!

If you didn’t take advantage of the pre-order option, you may not be aware that 5 went live last night.

received_15727841828195583567499133291493163.jpeg
It’s been less than 24 hours and…I’m already being asked for 6! It makes me laugh and cringe at the same time. I wish I could write these as fast as people read them. But alas, I can’t. However…we MAY be in luck. Kind of. Caldera 6 MAY have already been written and MAY be in the hands of the editor as you read this. I say ‘MAY’ because from here on, everything is out of my hands. I MAY have started 7, but fighting this horrible case of MAN FLU that my daughter brought home has really put a damper on things.

Anywho, I am thrilled to say that the plan is to get Flags of the Forgotten out mid-June. Hopefully in time for my birthday!! (hint-hint to the powers that be) If you’ve been hiding under a rock, then let me tell you, Flags is my crossover baby. I’ve been writing in the horror/urban fantasy genre for so long but I always wanted to try my hand at something along the lines of a political thriller. This one isn’t so much ‘political’ but the betas who test drove it said that it definitely measures up in the thriller department, so I’m running with it!

Okay, enough shameless self promotion.

Here’s a teaser for those who can’t wait for Caldera 6. It’s just the cover, but at least now you’ll know what to look for when the time comes.

Caldera 6

Thank you to all of my new readers for the feedback and the positive messages. You can’t know how much it fans my internal flame and helps drive me to keep pushing on.

Good luck and happy reading!

Heath

A Heartfelt Thank You and Another Sneak Peek

I hadn’t realized how many people were now following my blog but it seems that every day I get notified of another follower. That’s awesome. I just wish I had more interesting stuff to blog about. I almost feel like I’m selling you guys short.

Either way, THANK YOU!

And, as promised, anytime there is something new, cool or soon to come, I announce it here first. Like the cover for Caldera 6.

Wait…what?! Caldera 6?! But…where is 5? Yeah, I know. Sometimes I like to put the cart before the horse and since I am the world’s WORST secret keeper, I’ll never be able to have a ‘cover reveal party’ like so many others do online.

Nope.

As soon as Jeffrey Kosh creates something that tickles my fancy, I tell EVERYBODY! And boy, did he do some fancy tickling this time around!

I really wish I had the patience to wait and have a big reveal party but we all know that’s not me. Hmmm. I guess it’s safe to say that if he made me a cover for #6 that there WILL be one. I better get to writing! 🙂

Check it out!

Caldera 6

Oh yeah. I’m digging it.

I sure hope the story I come up with is as good as the cover!

Sneak Preview

I always get excited when Jeffrey Kosh creates a new cover for me. They’ve all been perfect but some are just a little bit more… perfecter. Yes, I’m creating my own words now.

Anywho…I contact him really early this morning and say, ‘Hey I’m getting close on Caldera 5. Can you hook a brother up?’

Like ten minutes later he lays down this awesome cover and my mind is BLOWN.

I hope you like it as much as I do.

Enjoy!

Teaser

Don’t ya just hate a tease? I know I do.

But sometimes you just got to give hints…especially when the illustrious Jeffrey Kosh nails the cover AGAIN!

Yeah, nobody likes a tease.
But it’s so much fun sometimes!

Flags of the Forgotten

Just a quick update.

I’ve been inundated with emails from people asking about Caldera 5.  That’s a good thing. It means that people are enjoying my stories and they’ve become invested in the characters.

When asked, I always tried to be truthful, even when it wasn’t the answer they wanted to hear. In this case, I put off Caldera 5 for a bit to clean some other projects from my plate. Namely, Flags of the Forgotten. It was a project I started over two years ago and there are some close friends that I used as characters in that book. I think they gave up on the project since it took so long. But, alas, Flags is FINISHED.

Flags of the Forgotten

This is my first attempt at a political thriller type of story and I’m really nervous. My most trusted beta was instructed to give it a read and be hyper critical. She was. And she LOVED it. In fact, she really thinks I should keep the main character and make it a series. I revived Bobby Bridger from Whispers and thrust him into an impossible situation.  As much as I’d love to keep spinning yarns with him and these other characters, I have other projects that demand my time.

Like Caldera 5. And Monster Squad 9.

I’ve been splitting my time between these two projects and I am happy to report that I crossed the halfway point on Caldera tonight. Since I had started MS9 previously, I was actually ahead on it and I’ve hit close to the 60% mark with it. I really hope to have Caldera to the publisher some time late in April (fingers crossed). MS9 will depend on a number of factors, but hopefully I can have it out before summer.

So, there you have it. I’m asking, please,… a bit more patience. My old, arthritic fingers are doing the best they can.

In the meantime, I hope that those of you who decide to take Flags for a test drive like it. It was a labor of love and I’m really nervous about jumping into a genre that I’d never written in before. So, please, be gentle.

When there’s more to share, you’ll be the next to know!

Peace!

Monster Squad Update

I bet you thought I had totally abandoned the series, didn’t you? I mean, I did run away and pen the Hunter trilogy and readdress Caldera and I’m almost finished penning my first attempt at a political thriller with Flags of the Forgotten. I’ve also been working on some side projects that I wish I could share, but this isn’t the format for that.

But I DID go back and look at what I had started for MS9. I really didn’t like what I read and it wasn’t following my vision for the story.

Recruitment poster

Unfortunately, where I see things going involved almost a complete re-write. But rather than getting angry, I look at what happened with MS5. I inadvertently deleted nearly 40K words (almost half the book) and couldn’t recover it. The resultant rewrite was much better and fit the narrative better. So it really wasn’t a loss. I have to force myself to look at this rewrite the same way. In the end, it will fit better and the end story will be much more complete.

So, for those few of you who are still fans of the stories, rest assured, I will be finishing off the series. I can’t tell you if it will take another four book saga to do it or if it can be done with a final novel, but it will be done.

Thanks for listening and stayed tuned for more information.

Caldera Update

Well, for those of you who were expecting an October release of Caldera and the follow up stories that went with it…I’m obviously a bit late. We had a few editing issues and since I couldn’t hit the Turkey Day timeline either, we switched to the next holiday.

Caldera - Heath Stallcup

Please remember, if you’ve already read Caldera, the first two are split versions of the original. Hence the same cover art, but different colors.

Caldera 2

If you click on the pictures, you’ll be taken to Amazon where you’ll see that they’re now available for PRE-ORDER! Delivery date is set for December 26!

Caldera 3

Just the thing for those after holidays blues, or to relax a bit after all of the hoopla is done and you just don’t feel like picking up the house yet. Now you have an excuse to lounge about and READ! 😉

Caldera 4

To those of you who were hoping for a Halloween release, I can only apologize. Some things are simply outside of our control and this was one of them. However, just in time to ring in the New Year, you can join Hatcher, Candy and the rest of the survivors as they…well, no spoilers!

Merry Christmas y’all!

Remember, Rule #1…CARDIO!
