Ain’t No Saint Nick

Twenty plus years as a Tier 1 operator is ended by one missed IED. In pain, alone, and without a plan, CPO Chris Nichols retires to a sleepy mountain town as far north as he can get without a passport. Nick, to his friends, wanted nothing more than to retire to the great white north and enjoy the peace and serenity that comes with a life well lived. The twenty first century brought more plagues to mankind than any other time in history. Some were manufactured by man, others were acts of God. Even Mother Nature herself turned against the infestation known as man.
Nearly thirty percent of the population was killed by new virus strains. Racial tensions flared and evolved into two civil wars. Nations were fragmented with numerous ‘no-go’ combat zones controlled by local warlords, most still active to this day.
At a time when mankind should have been reaching for the future, it devolved into a nearly apocalyptic present, pitting neighbor against neighbor and nation against nation until another twenty percent of the world’s population had been extinguished.
Then came the asteroid Wormwood.
And everything changed.
Nocturna 2: Reveille
At a time when mankind should have been reaching for the future, life devolved into a nearly apocalyptic present, pitting neighbor against neighbor and nation against nation as three different viruses ravaged the population. Civil wars reduced the world population even more.
Then came the asteroid Wormwood and everything changed. Man did what nobody expected…they pulled together and worked to save the planet and themselves. Years after the space rock did its damage, people began to change. Old tensions were brought back as those afflicted were targeted by the fearful.
Then the real monsters appeared, and nobody was ready for what happened next.
Nocturna 3: Harbinger of Truth
Three terrifying viruses threatened the world. Race wars devolved into bloody civil wars. Just when man was about to exterminate himself, the asteroid Wormwood appeared and nearly finished the job. Rather than suffer a slow death, mankind pooled their resources and fought back to save the planet, and themselves.
Once the dust settled, a new plague appeared. One that brought back old tensions and pitted brother against brother as people began to change. Old tensions arose as those afflicted were targeted by the fearful.
When the real monsters appeared, nobody was prepared for what was about to come.
Man was no longer at the top of the food chain…
Nocturna 4: Altered Destiny
Pandemics, race wars and civil wars couldn’t kill off mankind. Mother Nature threw them a curveball in the form of an asteroid dubbed Wormwood. Rather than go quietly into that cold, dark night, mankind pulled together and saved what was left. They not only survived, but they helped to heal the planet and the things that divided them.
But Wormwood delivered a surprise that nobody was prepared for. As people became infected and slowly began to change, old wounds were reopened and man found himself divided once more.
When the real monsters appeared, people were too distracted with their petty squabbling to realize what was happening.
Nobody knew the truth behind what was happening, either.
Nocturna 5: Sacrifice
Pandemics, race wars and civil wars pushed mankind to the brink. Then Mother Nature did her best to finish off the plague of Man with an asteroid dubbed Wormwood. When all seemed lost, Man did the last thing expected…they set aside their differences and worked toward a solution. Not only did they survive, they helped to heal the planet and the differences that had once divided them.
However, Wormwood brought with it something that nobody was prepared for. A tiny life form, a prion, began to infect people and twist their DNA until an entirely new species sprung to the forefront.
Mankind fell from his throne as the new species, the Nocturna, prepared to take its place as the world’s newest Apex Predator.
Nobody expected what was happening.
Nobody knew the truth behind what was happening, either.

Government researchers are working tirelessly to find a cure, but time is running out. Over 90% of the world’s population is dead or infected and the number climbs daily.

On the off-shore Navy frigate Kauffman, an infected researcher threatens the lives of everybody onboard the new floating CDC laboratory.
Within the infected, certain disturbing traits are observed that cause survivors to question everything they thought they knew about the virus that devastated mankind.
In the battle for supremacy, who will come out on top?
The Marauders have been broken, but Simon refuses to surrender. Gathering a handful of his enforcers, he sets about getting his revenge…and he doesn’t care who gets hurt in the turmoil.
The Ragers are starving…and evolving. They don’t care who wins the war between the Survivors and the Marauders, they just want to pick their teeth with the bones of the losers.
The Marauders have been broken, but Simon continues his crusade. His forces are scattered and face uncertain fates while he plots his revenge. If he can’t have his toys, nobody will.

Government researchers have released a cure in a last ditch effort to save those infected with the rage virus. Humanity’s future lies with a genetically modified bacteria being spread across the globe.
Simon finally has his army. Even through the blur of fevered infection, his hatred for the Cagers never falters. He is determined to destroy those who humiliated him and take back that which is rightfully his.
So many things can go wrong, and humanity’s future lies in the crosshairs.

Hatcher and his community of survivors attempt to recover from a devastating and well-coordinated attack from the Zulus. With their home burned and their infrastructure failing, they branch out looking for a new place that they can defend. A place that they can call home.
The CDC researchers discover that their cure was not what they thought. As the first to be exposed begin to change into something else, they worry that they’ve doomed what is left of humanity to a fate worse than death.
Simon is wounded. The vast majority of his infected army destroyed in the attack on the Cagers. Now his people are shaking off their virus induced rage. The cure is taking hold and his ranks thin even more. He wakes to find himself alone in a changed world. But is he alone?

After discovering a new location to call home, Hatcher returns to Yellowstone. Ghosts of his past call to him in his dreams and he has to know their fate.
With their lives hanging in the balance, Broussard and Chaplain work to find a fix to their cure. With the aid of the CDC’s remnants they fight to save what is left of the U.S. government.
Simon finally finds peace of mind and does his best to slink into the shadows and disappear from thought. While running from his past, he discovers a new group of survivors that don’t realize they need his help. Will his softer and gentler nature be enough to keep them safe?

The idea was simple: Gather a group of some of the best writers in the apocalyptic genre, give them parameters for a story, and let them go. That’s how Middletown Apocalypse came into being. The first book was an experiment…me wanting to show the world how individual writer voices can take on a single story and make it unique.
And it worked.
…exactly how I’d expected.
Mu. Ha. Ha.
The reading public was surprised how well it worked. I was not. Why? Because there is some seriously good talent in the genre. Talent that could pull off what most would have normally considered an impossible feat.
And here we are again. This time around we have some new writers, a new setting, a new premise (building slightly from the first), but the same idea…a collection of talent setting out to illustrate not only the power of “story”, but the power of the writer’s voice.
