I’m So Bad At This

Guess what I did?
Rather, guess what I didn’t do…I didn’t announce that Nocturna 5: Sacrifice was available for pre-order. I also didn’t announce that it became available last month. Oh, I threw out a weak announcement on Facebook. But I didn’t Twit it. Or Tweeter it. Whatever. I have an Instagram. I know I do because I get notifications from it. I just don’t use it. I’m an old dog that hates new tricks and can barely stand most social media so you’d think I’d take better care of this blog. I mean, there are a handful of you in the same boat as I am. You’d rather get poked in the eye with a sharp stick than hang out online. So you follow my website or subscribe and then…I drop the ball. Hey, you should be used to me letting you down by now so why am I hashing over it now, right?

Okay, so yeah. Nocturna 5 is out!

Also, I am working on Nocturna 6 and the plans are to wrap up this story with it so I can pay more attention to some other projects I have in the fire. I’m actually getting a little excited about Nick’s storyline. It’s the ‘Ain’t No Saint; Nick’ I mentioned in the previous blog post. I’m hoping it becomes sort of a Die Hard meets Hallmark Christmas Movie kind of story, but we know how characters take on a life of their own and take over the whole dadgum thing. Remember when I made Tufo a ‘bit’ character in Monster Squad and he nearly took over the whole thing? Yeah. Well, in all fairness, Mark is kind of like that, so…I had it coming.

Anyway, I felt guilty for not announcing N5 and realized I hadn’t updated my Works page in like…forever. So I got that done as well.

For those who are curious, I actually have a few chapters into Bridger 3. I keep thinking that I got off on the wrong foot with it and I’ve gone back to change it numerous times, but every time I read it, it just FEELS right. So, I guess we’ll just have to see where that story ends up going, too. Who knows? Maybe if Nick takes off, I might put him and Bridger in the same room and they’ll either team up or kill each other.
Now wouldn’t that be something…

So, there ya go. You’re updated now. I know I always say I’ll try to do better in the future, but obviously I totally suck at it, so…cross your fingers and we’ll both HOPE that I can keep this thing updated in the future.

Good luck, God bless, and here’s wishing you all of the love, luck and bacon that you can handle!

Heath

You Still Have Time…Barely!

What happens October 31st?

Yeah, besides the wee beasties who toilet paper your yard, leave candy wrappers everywhere and egg people’s houses…something IMPORTANT?!

Middletown Apocalypse will be released!

Wait…you hadn’t heard? WHAT ROCK HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING UNDER?!?!

Let me tell ya, as one who took part in this little endeavor…it was fun. When I was approached with this project, I wasn’t sure what was going on, but with the other names involved? I knew it would be GOOD. I was in if they’d have me.

Our instructions: Write a zompoc story beginning at Middletown University in Middletown, Indiana and ending at another location. What ever happened between those two points were up to us. We could kill off the whole world or leave survivors in the event we wanted to revisit this small town again.

So, what happens when you give eleven of the best modern-day apocalyptic writers the same idea for a story and allow their twisted imaginations to go wild?
Middletown Apocalypse… that’s what.
Set in America’s heartland, these stories begin with chemistry student Charlie Noble and wind their way through the infected landscape of middletown America.
Abell, Chesser, Evans, McKinney, O’Brien, Rosamilia, Shelman, Stallcup, Tufo, Wallen, Wilburn.
Are you ready this?

Pre-Order your copy NOW!

middletown_cover

How did this come to happen? Let the man behind the project tell you in his own words:

So what are you waiting for?!

Picking at Mark Tufo’s Brain

Welcome back dear readers. Today I have a refreshing take for you. A short interview with none other than horror author extraordinaire, Mark Tufo! He’s taken on a whole new genre with his latest release, Dystance: Winter’s Rising, and today we get to find out a little bit more about why he decided to go there.  So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

mark1

If you’ve been living under a rock and have never heard of him, Mark Tufo was born in Boston Massachusetts. He attended UMASS Amherst where he obtained a BA and later joined the US Marine Corp. He was stationed in Parris Island SC, Twenty Nine Palms CA and Kaneohe Bay Hawaii. After his tour he went into the Human Resources field with a worldwide financial institution and has gone back to college at CTU to complete his masters.
He has written the Indian Hill trilogy with the first Indian Hill – Encounters being published for the Amazon Kindle in July 2009. He has since written the Zombie Fallout series and is working on a new zombie book.
He lives in Maine with his wife, three kids and two English bulldogs.

Well, now that the introductions are over, let’s get this shindig kicked off!

Me: What is the title of your latest release?

Mark: Dystance: Winter’s Rising

Me: Can you give us a spoiler-free quick description of it?

Mark: From birth to death, The War is all the citizens of Dystance know. As children it is drilled into their heads that war is the purpose behind all existence.
Winter doesn’t agree. She’s stumbled across remnants of life the way it was before The War began and now she longs to be as free as her ancestors.
With help from her best friend Cedar and the boy she is forbidden to love, Tallow. She believes she can do it. Winter can see a life beyond the Pickets, beyond the constant hunger and the threat of death, beyond the war machine.
Can one teenage girl and her dream of a better life really change the whole world?

Me: What (if anything) makes this one unique?

Mark: Well for me this is my first foray into the YA realm.

Me: Bold move for somebody that is so well established.  Can you tell us about your lead character? How are you able to play on their strengths/weaknesses?

Mark: Their strengths are also their weaknesses. They’re young and with that comes impetuous behavior, acting without realizing the consequences of their actions. But also most young people have very strong views of what is right and wrong and will act upon those feelings.

Me: True enough.  And anybody who has raised kids has plenty to draw on for ‘experience’ for their characters. So, what was your first experience with Young Adult stories? What made you decide to go this direction?

Mark: I guess it was the Harry Potter series that really made me delve into the YA scene and I’ve been sucked in since.

Me: Ah.  I enjoyed those as well, but I think the series that really pulled me into the YA genre would be Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games trilogy.
Okay, so Pop Quiz: The Apocalypse is now and you can choose ONE weapon as your only weapon during the EOTWAWKI. What is it and what do you think your chances at survival are?

Mark: I’d take a Ruger 10/22, very reliable gun and the ammunition is light enough.

Me: Excellent choice.  Probably my go-to weapon as well.  Okay, carrying on here.  Can you give us a list of authors who most heavily influenced your work?

Mark: It really does go back to Stephen King, I’ve been a fan of his writings since I was 10 and he scared the bejesus out of me with IT.

Me: Yeah…no.  Me and clowns don’t get along. Ever.  Ever-ever.
Now to get personal. How do you balance your ‘writing time’ with ‘family time’? Do you find your wife encouraging you more now that you have a HUGE fan base?

Mark: I have a very difficult time balancing work with home time. Being self-employed there is ALWAYS more things I need to do. If my kids weren’t grown this would be an impossibility. In a normal week I work anywhere from 70 to 90 hours.

Me: Oh man…I wish I could devote that much time to writing. Okay, one last one and I’ll let you run off cuz I know you’re busy…when last we spoke, you said something about having a series in as many genres as possible. Diversification, expansion on your writing. Is there an underlying driving force at work here?

Mark: First and foremost I write in multiple genres because I love reading multiple genres. It really is as simple as that.

Awesome.  Well, there you have it folks.  Mark Tufo and his latest release, Dystance: Winter’s Rising. Look for it on Amazon or wherever you like to pick up your favorite books.
If you’d like to be able to reach Mark or send gifts or whatever, here’s how to visit him:

While It’s Hot

Do you like buffets?  You know what I’m talking about. Dozens of different flavors all spread out so that you can sample the things you know you like or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can experiment a little and jump into something new, just to test the waters? Yeah.  Buffets are good.

chinesebuffet3

My kids love the Chinese buffet.  They know they want Chinese food, but they aren’t sure exactly WHAT they want.  The buffet is the perfect answer.  They can’t pronounce it, but they know they like ‘chicken on a stick’. Or they want that ‘white stuff crammed into the cracker flower’. They sometimes like a steaming bowl of ‘egg yuck soup’. Anything with shrimp is usually good as long as it’s not the ‘snot covered shrimp with onions’. Yeah.  There goes my appetite.

Well, back to my point.

For a limited time you can have a mind buffet…of sorts.  No, not brains for you zombie wanna-be’s.  But, for those who have yet to partake in the Epic Apocalypse box set, it is currently on sale for (get this)…less than a dollar.  Can you believe that?  99 cents buys you full length novels from the likes of John O’Brien, James Cook, Shawn Chesser and Armand Rosamilia.  They even let Mark Tufo toss in with these guys.  As a bonus, there’s a lip smacking teaser from Joe McKinney in it as well.  The only down side is, they let me put my stuff in it…sort of like that green gooey stuff over by the Sushi bar.  Yes, the pistachio ice cream has turned!

Awesome boxed set2

This set has a little bit of everything, and for the price, you can’t lose.

So do yourself a favor.  Check it out.  You’ll be glad you did.

World Horror Convention

Most of you are aware by now that the World Horror Convention is going on in Portland, OR.  Anybody and everybody that has anything to do with horror is converging on the city of Portland to rub elbows and hang out, have fun and network, visit with old friends and meet new ones.

While I won’t be there to enjoy the festivities, a lot of my friends and fellow authors will be.  If you are close, stop by and visit them.  If you are traveling there for the convention, spend some time at the different booths, but make sure you stop by May December Publishing and say hi to Todd and Denise Brown.  Then swing by and give the fellas from the Epic Apocalypse set a visit too.  Mark Tufo, Shawn Chesser, John O’Brien, Joe McKinney and Armand Rosamilia are manning a booth and if you are lucky, you might catch all of them at the same time.

Trust me when I say that it’s killing me inside to know that everybody is there and I’m not, but know that I’ll be there in spirit, wishing all of them the best of luck.  Plans are already in place for next year in Atlanta, but alas, that’s a whole year away.  Until then, if you want a set of autographed books, a Monster Squad coffee mug or bumper sticker you can find it at May December’s booth along with some other swag that I sent along to help spread the word.

So, have fun, see all of the cool things that Portland has to offer and enjoy yourself!
