Genoskwa Updates!

Good grief, I suck at maintaining this page. You’d never believe I was a ‘writer’ based off of what’s available here, would you?

Okay, enough griping, on to the news.

Genoskwa was what I would consider a success (thanks entirely to you, the readers). Genoskwa 2 is hot on its heels. G3 should be out any day now…and I guess I have to announce to the world that Genoskwa will no longer be a trilogy. It is officially a new series.
To be fair, I had no intention of making it a series. Heck, I originally just wanted to write the first one and be done with it, but the beta readers said no, you have to follow it up. Then my beautiful, charming, overly smart, and outrageously HAWT editor told me I needed to follow it up. Then my publisher said I had BETTER follow it up. So I decided I better listen to those who know best. But I can’t just write two…if there’s going to be more than one, then it has to be a trilogy at a minimum. (Yes, Bridger fans, that means there’s at least one more Bridger that I owe you!) And I really thought I did a good job of wrapping up the storyline with number 3.
But, after G3 went through proofing and beta, and after my editor…excuse me, my beautiful, intelligent, charming, and bodaciously hot editor told me that it should be carried on and made into a real series, who am I to argue?
So, to those of you who have followed the story this far, know that there is much more blood to be spilled, more acts of vengeance waiting in the wings, and (hopefully) even more nail-biting tension to be experienced. I just really, really, REALLY hope that I don’t disappoint.

In the meantime, know that G3 should drop just any day now and I hope you like the different spin I put on the story this time.

Here’s wishing you much love, luck, and bacon!

A Couple of Announcements

If you follow me on Facebook, you already know that I was privileged to work with Jack Wallen on a trilogy for DevilDog. Jack came up with the original idea and we ran with it. I’ll be honest, that first volume was rough. It took us a while to get our vibe on but once we did, the next two books flowed like warm honey.

Once we had finished with Congregation, I had the momentum going but nothing else to work on. I came up with another idea. It was just a fleeting idea, but it took root and began to grow.

In my earliest days of trying to become a writer, I was told that all monsters were fair game, EXCEPT, don’t write about Bigfoot. Sasquatch, Mountain Ape, Stone Monkey, Wood Booger, whatever you choose to call him, do not, under any circumstances, write about that particular elusive forest primate.
Ever.
EVER EVER.
Look at me now, being a rebel.
I just hope it doesn’t come back to bite me in the ass.

But I couldn’t help myself. I’ve always been a huge fan of Bigfoot and have planned for years to go camping in areas where they are supposed to be just to test my luck and hope to have an encounter.

For those who don’t know (I didn’t until I looked it up), Genoskwa is an Iroquois legend known as “ot ne yar hed” or “ot ne yar heh”, meaning “Stone Giant Man”. Genoskwa is Sasquatch’s larger, heavier, more aggressive cousin. They are known to twist the heads off people, decapitating them. Yeah, I had fun with that. I also pulled lore from other Sasquatch stories and compiled them together for this story.

Here’s the rough, unedited back blurb:
While tracking a potential terrorist cell, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force sends a field team to investigate. Traveling deep into the Catskill Mountains, the Albany field office discovers something far more terrifying than a terrorist training camp.
With more questions than answers, the JTTF team gathers their evidence and prepares to leave the forest when all Hell breaks loose. What started as a routine investigation quickly turned into a fight for survival against a foe that knows every inch of the terrain they are fighting on.
Nobody fights harder than when they are defending their home. Add the burning desire for vengeance and the battle becomes a war!

Special thanks go out to Allen Gamboa, Peter Ostini, Sherry Gabaldon, Frank Riley, Jim Chrisco, Monty Smalls, Douglas Fertig, Chris Davis, Alex Montgomery, John Lawson, Ken Oberlin, and Nick Waldron for allowing me to use their names as characters/victims. Even bigger thanks go out to my cousin Terri Stalcup for speed-reading the manuscript and offering her honest feedback. As always, your efforts are very much appreciated! I really don’t know what I’d do without my support team.

Okay, so that catches you up. If you enjoy my stories, then you’ll have a few to chew on shortly. The Congregation is currently on pre-order at Amazon. I believe the trilogy drops on June 27th. Genoskwa is currently in the second round of editing and will be released whenever the preproduction work is concluded and DevilDog can get it set up for retail sales.

Until next time, dear readers here is wishing you much love, luck, and bacon!

Apologies

For those of you who enjoy my stories and occasionally slip by here to check on upcoming projects, I owe you an apology. I know as well as anyone that I’ve been AWOL for some time now. It’s not the first time, and knowing me as well as I do, I’m pretty sure it won’t be the last. BUT, I’m back now and doing my best to get back on track.

I realize it’s been a year.
Not my worst, by any stretch. The first time I went AWOL was for over two years. I was convinced that I’d quit. It wasn’t worth the time, effort or heartache. But Tracy reached out to me and asked for something…anything that I could submit for her to publish. I piled together all of my short stories that had been donated to different charity anthologies over the years and let her have them.
Then I felt bad. I knew that most weren’t my best and she was getting the short end of the stick.
We talked. She suggested (rightly so, it turns out) that I turn Caldera into a series. So, with her gentle nudging, I found myself back in the world of trying to put ideas to words and words to paper. Burning the midnight oil became the norm and I was officially back in the game. Along with Caldera, I created other universes with other heroes and villains. I got back on course and stayed there, usually taking the holidays off since they’re so busy around here and…well…this last time I just couldn’t bring myself to sit back down and delve into the worlds I had created. Like anything, the longer you stay away from it, the easier it becomes. Two months turned into four turned into twelve turned into…too long.
Tracy didn’t hound me. She knew how I was and gave me the time she felt I needed. Until she was tired of waiting. I’m quite certain that it was her idea, but Jack Wallen reached out to me during the holidays and asked if I’d be interested in working on a new story idea with him. Like many others before us, two well known writers team up and put their heads together and with a little luck something incredible begins to take shape. And that’s exactly what happened here.
Jack contacted me and I put him off until after the holidays. Once they were done, I knew that he’d be ready to work so I forced myself to sit down and try to wrap up Nocturna 5 so that it would be off my plate and I could concentrate on the task at hand. And it worked. Maybe a bit too well. I decided to go on and work on Nocturna 6 while Jack and I built worlds. But with my return to world building, I stumbled upon a new creative energy that had me diving into other projects as well. While working on Congregation with Jack, and wrapping up the Nocturna series with number 6, I decided to break ground on a new Bobby Bridger story. And another story that I envisioned as kind of a bloodier, grittier version of a Hallmark Christmas movie that I’m calling ‘Ain’t No Saint; Nick’. Depending on the mood I’m in, that dictates which story I work on. Between those and the audible versions of Nocturna that Eric A. Shelman has so brilliantly brought to life, I’ve actually been staying kind of busy these last few days. I’m even trying to keep myself on task by keeping tabs on work with an online writer’s group that I’m a member of. Sort of my version of announcing online that I’ve started a diet and then tracking my goals for the world to see. Except it’s easier to create worlds than it is to lose weight so that may not be the best analogy.

Anyway, for those who care…I’m back. And I hope to stick with it this time.
At least long enough to bring some closure to the stories you’ve been following. And if I’m lucky enough for you to stick around, maybe you’ll enjoy some of the worlds I’m creating.

Thank you for your patience and your kind reviews. Sometimes those words are just the fuel we need to keep on keeping on.

Now, back to work.
As always, I wish you all much love, luck, laughter and most of all, BACON!

ANOTHER Something a Little Different

ANOTHER Something a Little Different

I caught the bug.
Not COVID…the children’s book bug. I’m pretty sure that’s a real thing.
I can’t really help it, so don’t blame me. I blame the time of year. The Christmas season. The fact that we currently have thirteen grandchildren might play a small part, but nonetheless, I bounced another idea off of Jeff Kosh. He loved it. My missus (also my biggest, best and hottest critic) absolutely adored it! In fact, she said it gave her chillbumps.

I tried to ‘Dr Suess’ it up a bit and make it rhyme. So many children’s books rhyme and I thought, ‘Pfft, why not?!’
OMG
I have such a new respect for Dr Suess, AND, now I know why he invented his own words.

Yes, it’s another Christmas book and no, the paperback won’t be available this season. In fact, I doubt that Littlest Christmas Tree paperback will be available before the holidays either, BUT…the e-book should drop any time on Amazon. I know, it’s not the same, but it is what it is.

I will say that the style is different than Little Tree. Jeff did some pretty cool 3D graphics stuff and I think it came out pretty cool. Let me know what you think.
Hopefully, I’ve got this out of my system now. I hope.

The Littlest Star
Little Star has no idea why there is a new star in the sky that cold winter night.
Follow along as she goes to Earth to see what all of the excitement is about and discovers her very own destiny. Perfect for all ages.

And for those of you caught up on Nocturna, I broke the halfway point on N5. Just so you know.
I know, I was really hoping to have it finished in time for Christmas but it doesn’t look like it’s gonna make it.

And, as always, here’s wishing you much love, luck and bacon!
And the Merriest of Christmases and a Happy New Year!

Something a Little Different

So I just mashed the button on a new project. And this one is a bit…different for me.

Here’s the back story, but in a nutshell. Have you ever had a dream and thought ‘Wow! That would make a grand story!’ or something along those lines? I do all the time. Except, I usually forget what it was before I can get up and pee. Don’t judge…I’m old.

Well, I had one of those dreams again, except…I remembered it. And I thought, that would make a really neat children’s book. Yes…children’s book. From a guy who brought you every form of horror, torture, murder and mayhem that I could think of, a children’s story crept into my dreams. And it took root. So to speak.

So, I bounced the story off Jeff and he actually liked it. Enough that he started playing with his software and sent me a couple of ideas he had. Before I knew it, we were up and running with it. I sent him the ‘script’ and he worked day and night and whipped this puppy out in a matter of days. His goal was to get it out BEFORE Christmas. I didn’t think it was possible, but…this is Jeffrey Kosh we’re talking about here. The man is a machine.

Anywho…fast forward a few days and…I just mashed the button on The Littlest Christmas Tree.

We wanted it available for print and Amazon – well, they’re just not as graphic friendly. So I tried Lulu and they are stupid simple to use. The only problem is, they require that I okay a physical proof before they’ll release it. We may not hit the Christmas season this year. But the digital version will be populating to Amazon soon and once it does, I’ll make sure the links are posted on Facebook, Gab, Wimkin and Parler.

Things always slow down writing wise around the holidays for me. There’s just too much going on and things to do in prep for the different events and longer nights and colder days and blah blah blah. So yes, writing took a back seat as it always does and I fell behind on N5. But this project was something that I wanted to try mainly because, I have forty some books out but nothing that my grandkids could really enjoy.
That’s now changed.

So, that’s it. My first children’s book is about to come alive. And, who knows? If it does well, Mr. Kosh and I may well have to team up and release more.

If I don’t get the chance to say it again before the holidays hit, I hope you and yours have the Merriest of Christmases and the Happiest of New Years. Please, stay safe and remember to love.

Peace, Love and Bacon!

October Releases

October Releases

Yes, you read that right. Releases, as in plural.
Bridger 2: Burned Bridges is slated to drop 10/13!
I’m really excited for this one even though I still question my ability to develop stories in this incredible genre. To be able to craft a universe where Bridger and his cohorts thwart evil is thrilling to me, even if it’s not up to par with those who normally swim in these waters.

Another project that I’ve been toiling on is slated to drop 10/27 and it’s starting to populate for preorder on Amazon as I type this.
Nocturna is an exciting new series that…well, it’s been a whirlwind getting this one ready! I started this a little over two months ago and have been hitting it hard and heavy on the daily. I finished Nocturna 4 in the wee hours this morning and sent it off for editing. So far, my primary beta reader really loves the series and is eagerly awaiting N5 to fall into her greedy hands!

I want to take a moment to brag here. (Yes, I’m tooting my own horn but only because others won’t toot it for me!) The editor attached this to the email when she returned the first in the series: “Heath, this new one is amazing. So creative….you OWN this genre. Can’t wait to sink my teeth into book 2.” I wish I could add that to the dust jacket.
I hope that I’m not setting myself up for failure by sharing that. Just because the beta (my missus…who reads everything I write and is my best critic) and the editor loved it, doesn’t mean it will be well received by the reading public. Time will tell.

For those who are going to ask, yes, the plan is to drop all four of the Nocturna stories on the same day. Paperbacks may take a while longer to get formatted since we originally slated all of this to drop around Thanksgiving and I asked that it be moved up. Who knows if we’ll all still be around after the November election anyway, right?

I originally hoped to keep it all a big secret and then just throw it out there and let the readers be shocked, but we all know I’m the world’s worst secret keeper. As soon as Jeffrey Kosh creates a cover for me, I have to share it. His covers are just too awesome to keep under wraps anyway!
The idea that I could keep an entire new series secret? Pfft! Like that could ever happen! So, why not spread the word and let readers know about it from the get-go!

While it would be nice to pull off a surprise like that, I get too excited. Each new release for me is like Christmas. I know that I have a small but faithful following of avid readers who really enjoy the yarns I spin, and trust me when I say, “I love each and every one of you!” Seriously, if it weren’t for you, I’d have no reason to keep writing. It seems that every time I get down because of a bad review or somebody’s negativity, one of you sends me an email or a Facebook message and totally revitalizes me for the next story. That kind of support is worth its weight in gold!
Of course, reviews help too…hint-hint!

Oh, and for those of you who allowed me to use your name and/or likeness in this new series…THANK YOU! The hardest part for me in creating a new universe is coming up with names for people that sound ‘real’. Too many times I’ve found myself trying to use names that sound like they fell out of a comic book.
So, in no particular order, thank you to:
Devra Sackman
Dillon Sapp
Jascha Zimmerman
Jeffrey Kosh (Grant Kosh)
Steven Feasey
Dr. Jeff Norman
Mitch Goodkin
Brandon Visek
Josh Forrest
Lauren Thompson
Debbie Dillis (still sounds like a stripper name to me…)
Cheri Thomas
Mary Ann Peden
Brian Hinnenkamp
Beans McGee
William Hartman
Thomas Aurand
If I missed anybody, I’m sorry, but I’m flying by the seat of my pants on this one.

I think that about wraps it up boys and girls. Please know how much I appreciate all of you and really hope that you’ll enjoy my October offerings.

Until next time, here’s wishing you much love, luck, happiness and bacon.
Lots and lots of smoky bacon.
And coffee.

Bridger 2

Bridger 2

I’ve wrapped up the second edition of Bobby Bridger and his exploits.  It may still be a bit as it’s cleaned up and polished but hopefully soon, it will be available. I still question attempting to dive into the dark and murky waters of political thrillers and espionage, but it’s been such a fun project.

Bridger 2 promo

From the back blurb:

A deadly ghost returns after nearly twenty years to pick off old foes, one by one.

A voice from the past calls Bobby Bridger to warn him before the old team is brought back together to face the threat. After members were singled out for assassination, Bravo Team is pointed in the right direction and takes the fight to them.

Columbian cartels, Mexican Federales, militia members and even the CIA collide in the jungles of Mexico with Bravo Team stuck in the middle.

They all should have brought more guns.

Pro Tip: If you think you want vengeance for old wrongs, think twice before setting your sights on Bridger and his crew.

Yeah, it needs work, but ask anybody, the blurb is the hardest part to write. You have to describe the story without giving away anything. You have to TRY to entice with a hook in just a few short lines and…it ain’t easy.

I just hope that you, dear reader, enjoy the story.

On to other projects!

I actually broke ground on something new for me. It’s called Nocturna. I got a few pages into the story and decided I needed a little inspiration. I immediately reached out to Jeffrey Kosh and told him what the project was about and he whipped me up a cover that really inspired me to push through the tough spots. In fact, his work has planted the seeds and now I’m thinking seriously of making it a series.

Nocturna 1

I know, most authors like to sit on their covers and have a reveal party, but I’m not that good at keeping secrets. I loved his concept work and decided to run with it, so that means I HAVE to share!

Set in a near post apocalyptic future, man has faced numerous pandemics, two global civil wars and just when things seem to be at their worst, an asteroid strike that should have been an Extinction Level Event. But mankind does something that nobody expected…they pull together to recover. Things are just starting to look up when…well, let’s just say that there was a surprise hiding in that meteor.

This is still in the early stages but I hope to have it available by Halloween. Fingers crossed!

So, that catches everybody up. I hope you are doing your best during these strange and difficult times. Know that we indie writers are still out here wishing each of you much love, luck and bacon!

And the Award for Worst Blogger Goes To

Has it really been two full months since I’ve updated this thing?

Yeah, it has. Usually I try to pass the buck and say, “Well, nothing has really happened since we last spoke” and then try to invent ways to make myself sound semi-productive, but the truth is, stuff did happen.

Let’s start with the release of Caldera 5 Audible!
Yay

Caldera 5 Audible

And…the release of Caldera 6 Audible.

C6 Audible

So, there’s that. And yes, Max is cleaning off a spot to fit in C7 and the rest when his schedule allows.

You really think I would have been all over those, right? I mean, I always tell you that I’ll announce here and at Facebook but once again, I dropped the ball.

In other news…Caldera 12 has been finished and sent to editing. It’s bounced back and forth and has gone into the que with the publisher. I think we’re looking at a June release for that. Maybe we’ll get lucky and see it out around my birthday.

C12

For those of you who have been following along, this ends the Caldera series. I left enough of the characters alive that I could maybe one day go back and address them again, but really, what more could be told after twelve stories?

I’ve broken ground on Bridger’s next escapade. Some of his partners in crime will be returning and a whole slew of new characters will be added to the fold for this story. Special thanks go out to Phil Sammons, DJ White, Lisa Vasquez, Matt Laughlin, Gregg Soares, David Mauk and my childhood friend Mario Gomez for allowing me to use their names for characters. They’re all bad asses in more way than one!

Once I wrap up Bridger 2, I want to move on to other projects that are rattling around in the old noodle and use Bridger 3 as a sort of reprieve for those times that stories go stale or I just need to step away. Believe it or not, that was how Caldera came into being. I had no desire to write any kind of zombie story but when I’d get burned out on the Monster Squad, I turned to another idea just to clear my mind. Before I knew it, Caldera was born and you see what it turned into.

So, enough prattling and apologizing. I won’t promise that I’ll do better but I will promise that I’ll TRY to be better at keeping this place kept up with all of the latest and greatest news and ideas.

Until then, here’s wishing you much love, luck and bacon!

Heath

I Dropped the Ball

I just realized that I hadn’t updated the site in a while. Actually, not since C8 and we are anxiously awaiting C11 to drop at the end of the month. That’s just unacceptable.

I’m sorry. I wish I had a valid excuse for letting things lapse here, but I don’t. Since I last posted, both C9 and C10 have released.

C9 C10

For those keeping score, C9 hit the shelves on Halloween and C10 was a Turkey Day release. Now, just after Christmas (when everybody has their new devices) C11 will be available!

C11.jpg

I wish I could say that 12 was soon to follow, but alas, I just got the template laid a few nights ago and it’s been a bit tough getting back into the writing habit. I can say that not all of this time was wasted doing silly stuff like enjoying the holidays with family. I actually got a little work done. Max Zener stepped in to narrate the rest of the series and he was able to pump out C4. We did a line by line with it and I just recently mashed the button so you audiophiles out there will soon be able to enjoy the continuation of the story! Ya know, it’s not easy jumping from C4 to C12. So much has happened since then that…it’s just been tough.

For those of you who have been with this series since the git-go, if you’ve heard the rumors that 12 will be the series end, then you heard correctly. There’s just too many other projects languishing by the wayside. It’s nearly impossible for me to ‘universe jump’ any more. My brain just isn’t what it used to be I suppose. Going from one cast of characters to another takes me a lot longer to adjust to than it used to.

I will say this, though…just because Caldera is ending doesn’t mean that we’ve seen the last of the characters. I actually have a spin off in mind that may or may not see the light of day. I’ve toyed for months with the idea of doing a spin off of the Monster Squad under the IMPACT label and even have a few ideas bouncing around in my noggin. It’s just getting the time and mental faculties sharpened enough to jump back into that world.

Anyway, I’m going to wrap this up. This is time that could be spent writing the tales you love to read instead of sharing mind-spew. So with that, I’ll bid you adieu. We’re caught up on upcoming releases and I promise, I’ll try to do better in keeping you updated.

In case I forget to come back between now and then, Merry Christmas! I hope that you and yours has the happiest of holidays and a prosperous new year!

Love, Luck and Bacon!

C8 Is Out and Other Stuff

Okay, so Caldera 8 went live yesterday. Yay!

Caldera 8

Here’s the obligatory picture that everybody says will help drive traffic to your site.

But that’s not really what I came here to talk about.
I’ve been lucky enough to be invited to speak to a few writing groups. I even joined one afterward. Good people in that group. But…one thing that I’m often asked that I don’t always address well is, “What would you tell yourself if you could go back and give yourself advice when you first started writing?”

Most of the time I think, ‘Don’t QUIT! Write whatever you love and those who love it will find it.’ Or, something to that effect.
But here lately, I’ve been taking more trips down memory lane and I recall a moment when I was ready to pack it all in. I had made the mistake of getting online and reading through some ‘Writer’s Forums’. Oh wow. Some of the people in those places are completely whackadoodle. And yes, that’s actually a medical term for ‘nutso’.

I remember I joined this one group and they were discussing all kinds of topics. And being completely new, I was totally enamored with their replies and their suggestions and…well, I believed them. Imagine that! Believing people you don’t know on the internet.

Anyway, I remember this one guy (who everybody seemed to look to as sort of the group leader or guru or some such) and he was saying, ‘if you write more than 500 words in a day, then it’s crap and not worth reading’.
Well, that blew my mind. I mean, here I was throwing down THOUSANDS of words a day sometimes. Did that mean my writing was crap?
He went on to tell folks that unless you were signed with a Big 6 publisher, you weren’t a REAL writer.
Oh wow. I’m totally screwed then.
Another of his rants was about ‘horror’ and how only IDIOTS read such drivel.
Well, I have no idea what golden pearls of wisdom this guy was writing, but I had concluded that he:
1. Wrote less than 500 QUALITY words per day.
2. Must be signed with at least two of the Big 6 because people just hung on to his every word. And;
3. Whatever he wrote, it must NOT be horror.
He’s so lucky.

Well, needless to say, I was sent into this downward spiral. Seriously, I was ready to just hang it all up and walk away. I mean, who was I to question this guy? Anybody who did dare to question him got raked across the coals by the entire group.
But one voice did. He told him that he was an indie who hired reputable editors and cover artists and he worked his tail off to market himself. He made himself available to his readers and he loved interacting with them. And he made good money doing it. Oh, hell no! This was sacrilege and they laughed this guy right out of the forum. How DARE he say something that went against the great an almighty Oz?!

I actually called my editor at that time. An indie writer who built himself up from the worst possible starting point and remade himself into a force to be reckoned with. He talked me off of the ledge and convinced me that my writing was worthy. If nothing else, let the sales prove that point. Take the risk, believe what he told me and finish what I started.
So I did.
And I’m so thankful that I did. Because of my writing, I’ve met some of the most wonderful people out there. I’ve taken the hits and the less than constructive criticisms and tried to improve my storytelling. I’ve made friends with some of the coolest people with a similar off kilter sense of humor as mine and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this ride.
No, I’m not quitting or anything silly like that. I was just reminded of the time when I allowed nameless, faceless people on an internet forum convince me that there was only one way to do something. And I almost believed them.

So, I guess I wasn’t wrong when I said that I would tell myself not to quit.
But I would also add, don’t listen to internet commandos who proclaim that there is only one way to do something. Look at others who can prove that person wrong and do what they did.
Yeah.
I think that’s what I’d tell myself.
Oh, and exercise more. That way you can eat more bacon. 🙂
